Johnson County Jail Roster Overview
The official Johnson County Jail Roster is hosted on a Johnson County government subdomain and linked by the Sheriff's Office as the inmate roster and daily arrest reports. It is free and does not require a login. The roster inspected in June 2026 displayed All Inmates and offered two view choices: All and Recent Bookings. It also included a Name Search field, an Update Results button, a Show all charges control, and details links for each visible inmate row.
The roster's scope is narrower than many users expect. The 2024 jail needs assessment reproduced the county's disclaimer that the roster lists people currently or within the last 48 hours in custody of the Johnson County Sheriff. It may include Johnson County detainees housed at another county jail, and it does not include juveniles. Sentenced state prisoners are searched through the Iowa Department of Corrections. Federal inmates and immigration detainees use separate federal systems.
Use the Johnson County Inmate Roster
A good Johnson County inmate records search starts broad, then narrows. Names on the list may appear in last-name-first format, middle names may be absent, and exact spelling can matter. If the search does not find the person, Recent Bookings may still help when the booking is new. If neither view works, call the jail information line or use the records-request process rather than treating a missing live-roster entry as proof that no booking happened.
- Open the official Johnson County Jail Roster.
- Choose All for the broadest current and recent custody view, or Recent Bookings for newer entries.
- Enter name text in Name Search, using a last name or distinctive name fragment first.
- Use Update Results, then read Date Booked, Name, Age, Date Released, Housing Facility, and Details.
- Open the detail page for charge tables, cause numbers, bond type, bond amount, and photo access.
Johnson County Roster Search Fields
The Johnson County jail roster is simpler than a statewide court or prison search. It does not publish advanced operators, wildcard rules, or a booking-number search box. The list page does support charge expansion, which is useful when a user wants to scan offense summaries without opening every profile.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inmate View | Radio | Unspecified | All or Recent Bookings; All was checked by default in inspected HTML. |
| Name Search | Text | Optional | Accepts name text. No official wildcard or minimum-character rule was displayed. |
| Update Results | Submit button | n/a | Refreshes the list with the selected view and name text. |
| Show all charges | Show/hide control | Optional | Expands charge lists under all visible rows. |
| Details arrow | Link | Optional | Opens the full public inmate profile. |
The roster screenshot in the manifest comes from the county's official list page. The official roster source shows the All and Recent Bookings controls before the list of inmate rows.
The image matches the search workflow: choose a view, search by name if needed, then open the detail record for the fields that do not appear on the list.
Johnson County Inmate Profile Fields
A roster list row is only the first layer of Johnson County inmate records. The inspected detail page showed identity, custody, address, arresting agency, demographics, physical description, and charge tables. It also had a form button labeled View Photo. The detail page is the better source for bond and court follow-up because cause numbers and bond fields are not visible in the same depth on the list page.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Date Booked | Full booking date and time, with seconds on the detail page. |
| Housing Facility | Johnson County or another jail housing the person for Johnson County custody. |
| Booking Photo | A View Photo button, when available, rather than a thumbnail on the initial text profile. |
| Charges and Code Sections | Offense descriptions with Iowa statute sections and offense levels when populated. |
| Cause Number | Court or criminal cause number, useful for connecting the jail profile to Iowa Courts Online. |
| Bond Type and Amount | Bond details by charge, with sample values such as CASH/SURETY or NO INFO. |
County, State, and Federal Inmates
Johnson County inmate records split by custody system. County jail records cover people arrested locally, held pretrial, serving short local sentences, waiting on holds, or waiting for transfer. The Iowa DOC offender search covers sentenced state prisoners and certain parole or community-corrections records. The DOC page cites Iowa Code 904.601(1), says the data is public information, and warns that updates are weekly and may change quickly.
Johnson County research did not locate an official sheriff mobile app with a jail roster, warrant search, or booking-photo search. JoCo Iowa Ready and Smart911 or Alert Iowa are emergency and preparedness tools, not inmate lookup tools. For people who need status alerts rather than a single roster check, Iowa VINE is the documented notification channel linked from Johnson County jail resources. VINE is useful for custody and case-status notices, while the roster remains the place to read current sheriff custody records. Use both when notice timing matters.
| Custody | Where to Look | Important Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Pretrial or short sentence | Johnson County Jail Roster | Current and recent sheriff custody, not a full historical archive. |
| Sentenced state prisoner | Iowa Offender Search | Use offender number, location, or county of commitment when available. |
| Federal inmate | BOP inmate locator | Covers federal inmates from 1982 to present. |
| Immigration detainee | ICE Online Detainee Locator | Search by A-number/country or name, country of birth, and date of birth. |
Johnson County Jail Facilities
Two facilities in Johnson County affect inmate lookup, but only one is the county jail. Johnson County Jail is the sheriff-run booking and detention facility in Iowa City. Iowa Medical and Classification Center is a DOC prison in Coralville. The lookup system changes with the facility type.

Booking Process in Johnson County
Johnson County's jail photo tour gives concrete booking details. Arrestees enter through the intake vestibule and inmate intake elevator, not through the public lobby. Deputies remove handcuffs, jail staff search for contraband, and the person moves into a 90-square-foot booking room. The tour says only one person can be booked at a time, so arresting officers may wait with prisoners during busy periods. Photos and fingerprints are taken in booking.
People may be required to change into jail clothing and shower. Personal clothing is placed into a mesh storage bag until release. Temporary holding cells are used for disciplinary status, special needs monitoring, temporary placement during busy periods, and overnight court-waiting placement. The jail also has video and non-video courtroom setups for initial appearances. Jail booking data shows custody and charges; Iowa Courts Online shows the court docket after the case opens.
Johnson County Jail Visitation
The current Jail Division page controls over older photo-tour schedules. Visits are grouped by inmate last name. Visitors need picture ID, must sign the log, and anyone under 18 must be with a parent or legal guardian. Each visit is 20 minutes total, with one session per day.
| Inmate Last Name | Days | Time Windows |
|---|---|---|
| A-L | Monday, Wednesday, Friday | 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. |
| M-Z | Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday | 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. |
Request Older Johnson County Records
The Sheriff's Records Division maintains records for people booked into the Johnson County jail, officer investigative reports, accident reports, sex offender registry records, and firearm permits. Jail public-information records checks can be requested in writing or in person. The search requires full name and date of birth, costs $5 per searched request, and returns date of arrest, arresting agency, and charges only. It does not include disposition.
The broader Johnson County public-records request page explains that anyone may request public records in Iowa and that the county form is encouraged but not mandatory. Confidential information may be withheld or redacted, and fees may apply for staff time, copies, attorney review, IT work, storage devices, postage, or shipping. For live custody, charges, bond, or a scheduled release date, call jail staff at 319-356-6025.
Note: A $0.00 bond field or a blank release field should be confirmed with jail staff before any release plan.
